Bill Blackaby Voted Suffolk County ASA Volunteer of the Year 2014
Stowmarket Swimming Club was extremely proud to see Bill Blackaby
win the Suffolk County ASA Volunteer of the year award. Below is the full
detail of his nomination – well done Bill
Bill Blackaby has been involved with Stowmarket Swimming Club for almost ten years. His
involvement with the club began when his son swam, however although he has since left to
go to university and follow his own career, Bill has continued to offer this time, expertise and good humour.
Over the years Bill has undertaken many different voluntary roles within the club Welfare Officer, Chairman, Press Officer and in addition to this he also coached every Sunday
morning and Wednesday evening, and still continues to do this every Wednesday.
The club has come to rely on Bill to help with the smooth running of the Club Championships
where he marshals swimmers, entertaining them immensely with his sense of humour.
Bill has overseen the medals table at the County Championships and Regional
Championships for many years, ensuring that other club parents help to create “Team
Blackaby” so the championships winners are rewarded correctly and timely.
On a national level, Bill was very proud to have been selected as a volunteer for the 2012
Olympics and Paralympics where he was a Pool Side Aquatic Team Supervisor. Assisting in
the supervision of swimmers during warm up and racing sessions in the Aquatics centre.
Throughout these show cases of British sport, Bill not only gave up his time but also travelled
daily to the venue from his home outside Stowmarket at his own considerable expense.
This year Bill will take on the same role at the Commonwealth Games and is currently
organising somewhere to stay in Glasgow to enable him to do this. He is very much looking
forward to this event.
Clearly Stowmarket Swimming Club feel that Bill is an excellent role model to every other club member and a true voluntary ambassador for the sport of swimming”
